Hours

Sima Yuan put an ordinary white steamed bun in a steamer and heated it until the water inside completely disappeared. After 2 hours, the bun was gradually carbonized into pure black and finally “air-dried” into hard lumps. The artist kept it in the refrigerator for up to two years and watched it from time to time. In this process, the original qualities of a steamed bun such as whiteness, softness, and edibility that satisfy human desires, were disintegrated one by one, becoming dark, cold, and inedible “strange thing”. Behind this slight movement hides the mystery of “time changes the nature of things”, and at the same time reminds people of the huge and heavy life themes such as death and desire. She also implements this process on other things like peanuts.
